| Home is where the Music is
As part of a string of documentaries commissioned by the SABC Home is Where the Heart Is, centres on Robbie Jansen is a legendary figure in Cape Jazz circles.
This documentary records the highs and lows, both in Jansen's professional and personal life.
His thirty-year career has seen him have a decisive influence on bands such as the Rockets, Pacific Express, Oswietie, and Sabenza.
SABC1 will be screening Home Is Where The Music Is, directed by Jonathan de Vries and produced by Idol Pictures Jack Lewis, on Monday at 22.00.
The high point of Robbies carreer as a magical moment in the 1980s when he came together with Chris Schilder, Kader Khan and the late Russell Herman to form a band called Estudio which played highly progressive jazz. The existence of an Estudio recording is legendary in jazz circles. No recording of Estudio was ever released.
Indeed it was the failure of Estudio to get a recording contract that made some of its members turn to drugs. In making Home Is Where the Music Is, the producers obtained a much re-recorded cassette tape with four Estudio songs. Thanks to the miracle of digital restoration, a wider audience can hear this controversial piece of music for the first time.
The impact of drugs on Robbie and his generation of jazz musos is one of the other themes that this documentary frankly explores.
The film details interviews with Rashid Lomdbard, Walter Brown (founder of The Rockets), Paddy Lee Thorp (music producer), and Steve Gordon (cultural activist), and the formation of Cape Jazz, an internationally recognised music genre.
