Brief Overview
JAB is a coming-of-age drama set in the world of competitive boxing and experienced through the eyes of a young coloured women from Steenberg. B (17) lives in a working class home with her mother, stepfather and younger brother, Quinton (15). JAB follows Bee is trying to deal with the issues and hardships thrown at her in this competitive and masculine world, but she is triumphant and graceful as she learns.

Her desire to box has emerged from a desire to protect herself and those she loves. Her brother Quinton is in a wheelchair after being paralysed a year ago in an incident which still wracks B with guilt. She never again wants to be in a situation where someone she cares for is hurt trying to protect her.

She is considered an oddity in her community because of her passion for the ring. In her matric year at Steenberg High School, she tries to balance her academic, boxing and family life.

The underground world of boxing on the Cape Flats is fraught with seedy elements of gambling and gangsterism, but B is determined to overcome all obstacles and find her way to the Olympics. She is also confronted with negative stereotypes which are common in the world of female boxing as well as those prevalent in the community of Steenberg. Steenberg is an area riddled with crime, drugs and gangsterism most who survive here are all tarnished with the same brush and very few are expected to succeed. JAB allows these characters the opportunity to change and disprove the stereotypes. As Bee travels through her young adulthood and deals with issues of morality, loyalty, love and self image, so do the other principle and secondary characters in the series.
